2 for 2 for today (26 for 40, overall)“Heroes” - This one was my #15. Always liked this song from the namesake album. It was my highest ranked song from the album and the only song from the album to make my top 40.
Life on Mars? - This one from Hunky Dory was my #5 and was my highest ranked song from the album, one spot ahead of Changes. It's quite possibly one of his best vocal performances.
The collective was 65% in agreement with me. Next time, the collective needs to do better.
At least the 65% agreement rate was better than the Kiss countdown agreement rate, which was only 60%.
My top 40 list and remaining 84 contenders (in parentheses are the collective's rankings). Songs #41-56 were my hard cuts and the rest after that are my remaining 84 contenders. NR Station To Station (10)Biggest disappointments:
1. Except for a couple of songs from Blackstar, how unloved his songs past the mid-80s were, especially many of the songs from The Next Day (and Extra.) The Next Day (and the Extra companion disc) is a really great album. Thought for sure at least one song from it would've made the collective's top 40. I would stack this album up against many of his classic '70s albums. There may not be any all-time classic songs on The Next Day (and Extra) but taken as a whole from start to finish, it is a solid album with hardly any filler. Some of his classic '70s albums are uneven with more filler, despite having some of his best-known and beloved songs.
2. Where Blue Jean finished in the countdown. Are you freaking kidding me? #57? How this one didn't make the top 10 (forget about the top 40,) is beyond me. If this song had been on say Scary Monsters or any of his '70s albums, I'm quite sure it would've easily made the top 40. My guess is it got penalized by some because it was on the uneven, frowned-upon album Tonight that some people dismissed. I don't know really. But that is my guess along with the fact many voters don't like pop/dance-oriented songs all that much. Even though Blue Jean is pop/dance-oriented, it still rocks hard and has elements of other types of music in it, such as Jazz. Also it has one of the most distinct bass lines of any song out there.
My album breakdowns of my top 40 and remaining 84 contenders:
1. The Next Day (and Extra companion disc) - I had 11 contenders make my list, with 5 of them making my top 40 (The Next Day, The Stars (Are Out Tonight,) Valentine's Day, I'll Take You There, Atomica,) along with the 6 other contenders (Dancing Out In Space, (You Will) Set The World On Fire, So She, Like A Rocket Man, Born In A UFO, God Bless The Girl.)
2. ...Ziggy Stardust... - I had 4 contenders and all 4 made my top 40 (Moonage Daydream, Starman, Ziggy Stardust, Suffragette City). Actually if you count the non-album tracks (John I'm Only Dancing, Sweet Head) associated with the recording sessions or put on later reissues as bonus tracks, I had 6 contenders.
3. Scary Monsters - I had 4 contenders with 3 of them making my top 40 (Scary Monsters, Ashes To Ashes, Fashion,) along with the other contender (Because You're Young).
4. Let's Dance - I had 4 contenders with 3 of them making my top 40 (Modern Love, China Girl, Let's Dance,) along with the other contender (Cat People (Putting Out Fire)).
5. Hunk Dory - I had 3 contenders with all 3 of them making my top 40 (Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Life On Mars?).
6. Lodger - I had 4 contenders with 2 of them making my top 40 (D.J., Boys Keep Swinging,) along with the other 2 contenders (African Flight Night, Red Sails).
7. Blackstar - I had 3 contenders with 2 of them making my top 40 (Blackstar, Lazarus,) along with the other contender (I Can't Give Everything Away).
8. Young Americans - I had 2 contenders with both of them making my top 40 (Young Americans, Fame).
9. Diamond Dogs - I had 3 contenders with just 1 making my top 40 (Rebel, Rebel,) along with the other 2 contenders (Diamond Dogs, 1984).
10. Tonight - I had 3 contenders with just 1 making my top 40 (Blue Jean,) along with the other 2 contenders (Loving The Alien, Dancing With The Big Boys).
11. Station To Station - I had 3 contenders with just 1 making my top 40 (Golden Years,) along with the other 2 contenders (TVC 15, Stay).
12. Aladdin Sane - I had 3 contenders with just 1 making my top 40 (The Jean Genie,) with the other 2 contenders (Drive-In Saturday, Cracked Actor).
13. "Heroes" - I had 3 contenders with just 1 making my top 40 ("Heroes",) along with the other 2 contenders (V-2 Schneider, The Secret Life Of Arabia).
14. Heathen - I had 3 contenders with just 1 making my top 40 (Slow Burn,) along with the other 2 contenders (Everyone Says Hi, A Better Future).
15. Outside - I had 4 contenders with just 1 making my top 40 (Hallo Spaceboy,) along with the other 3 contenders (I'm Deranged, Thru' These Architects Eyes, Strangers When We Meet).
16. David Bowie 1969 (Space Oddity) - I had just 1 contender and it made my top 40 (Space Oddity #1 overall.)
17. The Man Who Sold The World - I had just 1 contender and it made my top 40 (The Man Who Sold The World.)
18. Low - I had just 1 contender and it made my top 40 (Sound And Vision).
19. Reality - I had just 1 contender and it made my top 40 (New Killer Star).
I also had 7 non-album tracks (TV-Specials, movie soundtracks, other artists' albums, etc.) as contenders with 5 of them making my top 40 (Under Pressure, Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy, This Is Not America, Absolute Beginners, All The Young Dudes,) along with the other 2 contenders (That's Motivation, Magic Dance).
Albums that got no songs on my top 40, though most of them, except for 1, had at least one contender:
20. Never Let Me Down - Had 6 contenders (Day-In Day-Out, Time Will Crawl, New York's In Love, '87 And Cry, Julie, Girls).
21. Earthling - Had 2 contenders (Little Wonder, I'm Afraid Of Americans).
22. Hours - Had 2 contenders (Thursday's Child, The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell).
23. Black Tie White Noise - Had 2 contenders (Jump They Say, The Wedding Song).
24. David Bowie 1967 (Deluxe Edition) (debut album) - Had 2 contenders (Uncle Arthur, In The Heat Of The Morning).
25. The Buddha Of Suburbia - Had 0 contenders. Though, one song from the album that he re-recorded for Outside was a contender. I prefer the Outside version over the Buddha version. So, Outside got the credit for that song.
Didn't consider the covers album Pin Ups since it wasn't eligible. Also, any songs that were contenders that happened to be on the posthumous album Toy got credited to the original albums they were originally associated with (or at the least their recording sessions or deluxe editions with bonus tracks.)
Now my album rankings: My album breakdowns should reflect my album rankings except for a few minor differences. For example I might rank a particular album higher than another even though it may have had fewer contenders. I take into consideration the strength of the songs along with how much filler I feel each album has.
1. ...Ziggy Stardust... - Very few filler songs.
2. Hunky Dory - Solid album with 3 strong songs and only maybe a couple so-so songs.
3. The Next Day (and Extra companion disc) - Very few filler songs but Ziggy and Hunky Dory beat it based on the strength of the songs.
4. Scary Monsters - With the strength of Ashes To Ashes, Fashion, and Scary Monsters, the rest of the album could've been recordings of David speaking in tongues and still be ranked this high.
5. Let's Dance - Barely below Scary Monsters because Scary Monsters has less filler, despite the strength of the 3 big songs from each album.
6. Blackstar - With only 7 songs, it is still a great album with Blackstar and Lazarus being the 2 big ones. I Can't Give Everything Away is another great song. The other four songs are good too with 'Tis A Pity She's A Whore, Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime,) Girl Loves Me and Dollar Days. And if you count the additional songs that were put on the Lazarus soundtrack recording and the No Plan EP, that's 3 more solid songs with No Plan, Killing A Little Time and When I Met You. No filler on this album and associated tracks.
7. Young Americans - Despite having more filler than any of the albums ranked above it, the strengths of the title track and the song Fame elevate the rest of the album.
8. Diamond Dogs - While I feel this album is an uneven album with some filler, the strength of Rebel, Rebel alone elevates this album to this spot, along with the title track and 1984. Also, the outtake Dodo and the demo alternate version of Candidate that are bonus tracks on some reissues are good too. "Weird Bowie" at his finest during the first half or so of the '70s.
9. Lodger - A solid, but not outstanding album with just a couple filler songs and a few very good songs in D.J., Boys Keep Swinging, African Night Flight and Red Sails.
10. Tonight - Blue Jean and Loving The Alien raise this uneven album to this spot. Most of this album, IMO, is uninspiring and without those two songs, would be much, much lower on my rankings near the bottom. The song Dancing With The Big Boys is a fairly decent song too from the album.
11. Station To Station - A solid album of 6 songs. Golden Years being the big one and TVC 15 and Stay pretty good too. While the title track seems to be loved by many people, the first half of the song is too slow for my taste and the 2nd half is too repetitive in the chorus. Song goes nowhere for me. Maybe some creative editing could've made it better for me. The other two songs are fairly solid songs too in Word On A Wing and Wild Is The Wind. Actually, Wild Is The Wind is a very good song, but I didn't consider it for the countdown because it is a cover song. He does a fantastic vocal performance on it.
12. Aladdin Sane - An album I never really warmed up to except for a few songs...The Jean Genie, Drive-in Saturday, and Cracked Actor. Those three songs elevate it to this position in my album rankings. The songs Panic In Detroit, Lady Grinning Soul, The Prettiest Star, and the other songs never clicked with me. Also, I didn't even consider his cover of The Rolling Stones' classic Let's Spend The Night Together.
13. David Bowie 1969 (Space Oddity) - The title track (my #1) by itself puts this album in this position in my album rankings. It could've been just this song and 8 nursery rhymes sung by David on the album and I would still place the album here. While some of the other songs on the album are decent, the others are just filler. This is before David was starting to get his footing.14. "Heroes" - The title track with the help of The Secret Life Of Arabia and V-2 Schneider boost the album here. One or two other songs are so-so for my liking and the rest filler.
15. The Man Who Sold The World - The title track is what puts this album here in my rankings. While no other songs made my contenders list, the album does have a nice collection of solid, but not great, songs with just a few filler songs. Like with the 1969 album Space Oddity, he was still finding his footing, but getting closer to what he would become after this album. This album and "Heroes" are very, very close in my liking, but I chose "Heroes" over this one due to the fact I feel The Secret Life Of Arabia and V-2 Schneider are better than anything on this album except for the title track.
16. Low - Sound And Vision puts this album in this spot. While there are a few other songs that are decent from the album that I somewhat like, they weren't strong enough to make my original contenders list for the countdown. The rest of the album does nothing for me.17. Heathen - The songs Slow Burn, Everyone Says Hi and A Better Future are the standout tracks from this album. There is another good song as well in Cactus (though that is a Pixies song David covered for the album that I didn't consider for the countdown.) A few other songs on the album are decent to solid with the rest being filler.
18. Earthing - While no songs from the album made my top 40, I feel the strength of Little Wonder and I'm Afraid Of Americans lift this album to this position. Also, David did some experimenting on this album with some far-out songs, such as Law (Earthlings On Fire) and Seven Years In Tibet. This is another album where "Weird Bowie" makes an appearance.
19. Outside - The song Hallo Spaceboy is the standout track here (I also like the Pet Shop Boys remix version.) The problem with this concept album is it has way too many songs resulting in too much filler. Though, the songs I'm Deranged, Thru' These Architects Eyes and the re-recorded version of Strangers When We Meet (originally from The Buddha Of Suburbia) are all solid songs.
20. Reality - The song New Killer Star is the highlight of this album. While I had no other songs from the album make my contenders list for the countdown, there are a few other solid tracks from it, along with some b-side covers and bonus tracks on the Tour Edition. The rest of the album, at least half, is full of filler.
21. Hours - While no songs from the album made my top 40, there are some very solid tracks on the album. Thursday's Child is the standout song and The Pretty Things are Going To Hell is a good song as well. There are some cool b-sides and japan-only tracks that are pretty solid as well. Rest of the album, though, nothing clicked for me.
22. Never Let Me Down - There are no standout tracks on this album, despite six of them (including bonus tracks, Japan-only tracks, b-sides) making my original contenders list for the countdown. Also, there was too much of that '80s production sheen applied to the songs. While the 2018 re-recorded version (using David's original vocals) of the album removes much of that '80s production sheen, none of the songs themselves became standout tracks even after that. Time Will Crawl, IMO, is the best song on the album.
23. Black Tie White Noise - Jump They Say is probably best song from the album and it seems always chosen to be put on every David Bowie compilation. Though, I consider the song to be just solid, above the average range of songs. The Wedding Song is also a decent song from the album. There are a couple other songs, including bonus songs (outtake and a non-album single) that were put on reissues, that are decent also, but they weren't strong enough to make my original list of 84 contenders. I consider about half the songs from the album to be filler.
24. David Bowie 1967 (Deluxe Edition) - His debut, with the extra Deram songs, has a few solid songs along with a few silly and whimsical songs, such as Uncle Arthur and The Laughing Gnome. The best song from the deluxe edition is, IMO, In The Heat Of The Morning. Since this was his debut album, he had no footing whatsoever. Though, over the next few albums he slowly found his footing, before hitting his stride with Hunky Dory and Ziggy.
25. The Buddha Of Suburbia - Nothing I like about it except for the song Strangers When We Meet. But the re-recorded version of that song on Outside is superior.
Disclaimer: These rankings could change over time for me because 9 of the albums were brand new to me before preparing for the countdown. If you remember, I said I was missing 9 albums from his discography in my David Bowie Collection. This countdown gave me reason to fill that gap by purchasing those 9 albums from Amazon. So, David Bowie 1967 debut (Deluxe Edition), and the eight albums from 1987's Never Let Me Down (I bought the 2018 re-recorded version in addition to a reissue of the original) to 2003's Reality were all new to me except for the handful of songs that had been put in various box sets and compilations over the years. While I listened to each of those new (to me) albums multiple times before I began my deep dive of the entire discography and before I began my original rankings, it still probably wasn't enough time to get fully immersed in those albums. So, over time, after I listen to some of these albums more, I might start liking them better than I do now. Though, I know a couple of them won't budge from their current spots. It's no surprise all 9 of those albums are the final 9 albums in my album rankings. LOL
